Mardi Gras is more than a Holiday in New Orleans

Mardi Gras, the French term meaning Fat Tuesday, is far more than just a holiday here in New Orleans. The celebration was originally bought here by the French over a century ago as a day of excess before the start of the Lentin season. Today, Mardi Gras is a beloved tradition of parades, parties, debutante balls, food and music  occurring for weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday. People from all over the world come to New Orleans to experience our unique type of celebration.

The original Mardi Gras parades started in the 1700’s when secret societies would openly parade and celebrate in the streets of New Orleans.  Later, elegant society balls were established, which is the model for today’s society balls. Members of today’s social clubs, or Krewe members, take part in the parades and host elaborate balls at some of the most gorgeous venues in New Orleans: many of them with celebrity guests and musical artists to keep the guests fully entertained.

The divine local cuisine in New Orleans is another thing that keeps people coming back for more! In addition, seasonal King Cakes ring in the Mardi Gras season with their festive purple, green, and gold icing and sprinkles. This delicious cinnamon cake is only available for sale during the Mardi Gras season, so tourists and locals alike must get them while they are hot! They even come in a variety of different flavors, whichever may strike your fancy.

For the weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, elaborate parades flow through the streets of New Orleans, bringing light, color, music, and fun for all ages. These parades showcase beautiful hand-made floats of different themes and styles. The floats in these parades follow unique and interesting themes, and onlookers will eagerly await what float will come next. Floats carry a multitude of goodies to be thrown to the excited onlookers, including beads, stuffed animals, toys, boas, snacks, and more. In addition to the floats, Mardi Gras parades also contain live bands and musical groups, dancers, and festive lights throughout. To experience a Mardi Gras parade in person is something that may be considered indescribable by onlookers.
